ITINERIS at the GEO Global Forum 2025

From May 5th to 9th, 2025, ITINERIS proudly participated in the GEO Global Forum, held at the Auditorium della Tecnica in Rome.

Building on Italy’s G7 presidency, the GEO Global Forum convened a diverse group of researchers, policymakers and industry leaders, providing opportunities to drive global cooperation, highlight innovative Earth observation solutions, and foster collaboration to shape a sustainable future for the planet.

ITINERIS actively contributed to the forum by hosting and participating in several dedicated high-profile public sessions at its dedicated exhibition booth. These sessions offered in-depth explorations of ESFRI environmental research infrastructures relevant to the GEO community and emphasized their importance in addressing global challenges

In the opening session, Dr. Giuseppe Gargano (ITINERIS Infrastructure Manager), Dr. Antonello Provenzale (WP Leader for ITINERIS Virtual Research Environments), and Dr. Ermann Ripepi (Focal point for ITINERIS HUB) delivered key insights on the ITINERIS project and the ITINERIS HUB, outlining its vision as a central point for innovation and collaboration in environmental research.

The first thematic session, moderated by Dr. Antonello Provenzale, focused on atmospheric composition and environmental exposure. Dr. Lucia Mona (National Contact Point) presented ACTRIS and Dr. Nicola Pirrone (Management Board of the EIRENE Project) showcased EIRENE.

Another session, moderated by Dr. Lucia Mona, highlighted carbon observation and river-sea systems. Dr. Sindu Raj Parampil (Science Integration Officer at ICOS Head Office) and Simone Sabbatini (Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change – CMCC) presented ICOS, and Dr. Francesca De Pascalis (National Coordinator) presented DANUBIUS.

On Wednesday, the ITINERIS booth insightful presentations on long-term ecological research and ecosystem analysis moderated by Dr. Emmanuel Salmon (Head of Strategy & International Cooperation at ICOS Head Office). Prof. Michael Mirtl (eLTER Coordinator) presented eLTER and Dr. Elena Paoletti (National Coordinator) presented ANAEE.

On Thursday, two dedicated sessions were moderated by Dr. Rosalia Santoleri (WP Leader for ITINERIS Marine Domain). The morning session focused on ocean observation and the marine environment, with presentations on EMSO by Dr. Ingrid Puillat (Director General of EMSO-ERIC) and on Euro-Argo by Dr. Elena Mauri (Vice Chair of Euro-Argo Council).

The afternoon session explored biodiversity and ecological data, featuring contributions on LifeWatch by Prof. Alberto Basset (Director of Lifewatch Service Centre) and on DISSCo by Dr. Vanni Moggi Cecchi (Italian National Node).

The final day of the forum witnessed a vibrant turnout at the ITINERIS booth, with strong participation from students and international delegations. The lively discussions underscored ITINERIS’ commitment to open science, youth engagement, and the promotion of inclusive, impactful research infrastructures that connect, empower, and sustain.

ITINERIS’ participation in the GEO Global Forum 2025 reaffirmed its strategic role in the environmental research landscape, aligning national commitments with the broader objectives of the GEO community and reinforcing the value of collaboration across research infrastructures.

We thank all participants and look forward to future opportunities for exchange and cooperation.
