WP6: Terrestrial Biosphere

WP Leader: Dario Papale (CNR- Istituto di Ricerca sugli Ecosistemi Terrestri)

Focusing on the terrestrial biosphere and inland waters, WP6 will organize the Italian contribution to Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBV) provision, Nature Based Solution and Satellite-derived product validation, contributing to support Italy’s leading role at European level in a subdomain where national and continental coordination, harmonization, and interoperability of the RIs is still a complex and unsolved issue compared to other environmental fields. The primary objective of the vertical WP6 is to understand, monitor, and mitigate the impact of environmental pressures, such as climate change and pollution. This involves coordinating and integrating data from seven research infrastructures (RIs) operating in the terrestrial biosphere to ensure optimal use and interoperability of collected data. Despite the heterogeneity among these RIs, the aim is to harmonize their efforts around fundamental questions, promoting inter-RI data use and standardization of methods. The first step toward achieving these goals is to invest in each participating RI to ensure seamless data collection and distribution through the ITINERIS HUB.

Major Objectives

  • Fill gaps in the key observations needed to ensure the provision of a complete and exhaustive view of the observed process/ecosystem/quantity;
  • Build a service to support RIs data use for pollution control using Nature Based solutions from planning to verification, designed also for private sector;
  • Build a service to support RIs data use in the context of ecological responses to global warming and their implications on functional biodiversity organization and conservation;
  • Develop services and technological tools for the sustainable use, valorization and optimization of agriculture and forestry resources for low impact bio-based processes, to mitigate climate change and foster circular economy;
